Grow Radio is seeking new DJs and volunteers.
If you have a desire to provide a listening experience not otherwise available on the FM in Gainesville then you may fit right in at Grow Radio. Specific show ideas not required. We’re a freeform station meaning you’ll be likely to hear anything at anytime. Variety, passion, diversity, depth and the new is what we like to hear. If you have an interest in DJing on Grow Radio or the skills and time to help out with web design, volunteer coordination, events, public relations and outreach please get in touch via growradio@gmail.com.

Indiegainesville,The Fine Print, The Iguana, and the Alachua County Library District have partnered up to bring you the Think Local Civic Forum on Wednesday, January 18th, from 7:30 until 8:45.

The forum will provide you a chance to ask the City Commission candidates in both the at-large race and the District 1 race questions about local issues–local business issues, energy issues, economic issues, etc.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Think Local Civic Forum, which will be held at the Alachua County Library District Headquarters.

We’re very excited about this, and hope to see you there. Help us spread the word! Share this post, talk to your friends, invite people–and stay tuned. More information is forthcoming!

Jerry Gerard RIP

we were saddened to hear the news of Jerry’s passing. His time in gainesville, from 1993-1998 at WRRX, 97X, was a rich time for our music community as Jerry brought great radio to the airwaves in Gainesville. An avid supporter of artists, local and otherwise, who weren’t typically given airtime on Gainesville radio, Jerry brought many artists to people’s attention who otherwise may have gone unnoticed. He has been and will be missed.

Below is from the WNRN website, where Jerry was last working before his illness prevented him from continuing.

The staff of WNRN is saddened by the news that Jerry Gerard, 52, passed away December 5 in Miami after a 6 month battle with cancer. He is survived by his mother, Joanne Winn. She asks that all donations in his memory go to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz with a follow up e-mail to bjones@monkinstitute.org.

Jerry was a passionate lover of music, and brought that to each radio station where he worked. In 1979, he started his radio career at WCCF, in Punta Gorda, FL, from there he moved to KRGI, Grand Island, NE to do overnights. He moved back to Florida in 1980, where is worked throughout the decade at WCEZ, West Palm Beach, WINZ, Miami, then to WSVN-TV, Miami. In 1991, Jerry returned to radio at news-talk, WMBM, Miami Beach. From 1993 – 1998, he was DJ, music director, and program director at Triple A 97 X. WRRX, Gainesville, FL had a loyal following in the local Gainesville music scene. From 2000 – 2003, Jerry worked at WRVG, Georgetown, KY, then helped found WUIN, Wilmington, NC along with Mark Keefe. He was at The Penguin from 2003 – 2006.

In 2007, Jerry Gerard joined the WNRN staff as News Director in September. He took over as midday host when Jaz Tupelo left to join WRSI in North Hampton, MA in early October. Jerry hosted 10am to noon, contributed to the music meetings, helped train a host of news readers, and did insightful interviews with Alejandro Escovedo, Sharon Jones, and others. He left radio and moved to Highland, NC in May 2009.

Alejandro Escovedo posted the news Saturday night on facebook saying:
“For Jerry Gerard who passed away last week. He was a music lovers DJ most recently at WNRN in Charlottesville, VA. He will be missed”
