After 14 years, Wayward Council is closing its doors for good on Thursday. They’re going out with a proper sendoff though with an awesome show featuring FIYA, Mauser, Assholeparade, Heroindod, Rose Cross, Rapturous Grief and more. Everybody should come hang out at Wayward one last time.

The all-volunteer record store and show space was co-founded in 1998 by Matt Sweeting, Laura Predney, Don Fitzpatrick and Frank Barber. Wayward has seen tons of volunteers come and go, played host to countless shows, band practices and activist causes. When I first moved to Gainesville I saw Torche play there and I think it was the loudest show I’ve ever been to; I’ll never forget it.

Here’s what Sweeting had to say about Wayward’s closing:

“How do I feel about it closing? Great, in the sense that it is closing on its own terms, and the intent was always to close it up when the need or desire for it to be open was gone. And I feel like we have reached that point; new ideas, new energy, right? It’s the nature of things to be born, grow and then pass on. And I think 14 years is a pretty good cycle for a non/no profit volunteer record store.”

The link below is to a short slideshow I made about Wayward Council for a class back in 2007, just around the corner from its 10-year anniversary. (Ignore my stilted voiceover in the beginning, Sweeting’s commentary is much better.)
